Frigid Winter Weekend

A cold but beautiful winter weekend on the Cape made for amazing photos of snow at beaches on the ocean and bay sides. The weekend began with a visit to Barnstable Harbor and Bone Hill.

It is amazing how many folks leave their boats and beach stuff around all winter long.

The ocean beaches--Coast Guard and Nauset Light were dramatic as always.

What a difference a season can make at Nauset Light

I have been to Coast Guard Beach hundreds of times, but never seen these stairs leading down to the Boardwalk. They had a special look in the snow at sunrise.

The sunset on Sunday eve at Skaket Beach in Orleans was spectacular, even if it was so cold we had to keep going in the car to warm up in between shots!

Imagine living here and seeing this show every night!!

Foggy November in Provincetown 2009

A wonderful over night in Provincetown on a mild and foggy November weekend made for great shooting. There were few people around town, which also made it a special time.
I awoke early and took a long walk along Commercial Street up to Land's End and then over to McMillan Pier. These are some of the images from my early morning walk.

The Monument is one of the major symbols of Provincetown. It can be seen on a clear day miles away as you approach, as well as all around town. I hadn't seen it so fogged in, which I loved.

Another special place in Provincetown is Land's End--there is a long jetty that you can walk out on and reach the actual tip of the Cape. Here is the jetty and the lovely marshy area next to it.

I loved this quirky scene I came upon on the beach.

Here is the Ptown version of a special Christmas Tree that they light each year:

Amazing Fall on the Cape:Cranberry Harvest

In October the Cranberries are harvested on the Cape. Most of the bogs use the wet method. First they flood the bog.

Then they drive this machine on it that has a large spinner in front that loosens the cranberries. This is what gets them off the vines and floating on top of the water. The next step is for the workers to use a large piece of plastic to corral all the berries into one area. Above they are in the process of doing that.

Here is a shot of them moving a big corral of berries to one side of the bog for removal to the truck. The guys are then raking them into a machine that they put in the water that looks like a big vacuum cleaner. It sucks up the berries and they go on top of a big truck.

The trucks have opening in the sides so all the water comes out and also the leaves and other stuff is separated, so all they have are the cranberries!

At the bog near my house, they also sell some cranberries--$5 for a 3 pound bag this year. It is an amazing process to watch. I highly recommend it!!

Hurricane Bill on Cape Cod

Although the hurricane didn't end up hitting the Cape, it did hit the seas, which had waves of 10-12 feet and tides that were amazingly high. On Saturday I went to Nauset Beach (without my camera, what was i thinking?!) but on Sunday I went with friends to Coast Guard Beach in Eastham. There were over 100 people all standing and watching the waves and the 3 surfers who looked like they were having a great time. The beach was closed to swimming.

There were many families with children and they were having a blast running in and out of the waves trying to miss them.

The lifeguards were there trying to enforce the no swimming, but otherwise, not much else to do......

It's Hydrangea Time!!

The Cape is alive with the hues of purple, pink, lavender and blue Hydrangeas. They are everywhere and a sight to behold. The conditions must be perfect for these plants and they can take your breath away when you see an array of them in varied colors. These pictures were taken at Hemeon's Farm stand in Harwich--a real stop the car moment!!

Getting Started

I never expected to be a blogger. But as a biker/photographer, I am excited to share my unique view of the Cape. I live in Brewster and ride almost daily around the neighboring towns of Harwich, Orleans, Dennis, Chatham. Of course I venture out all over and this blog will be my way of showing you what I see as I explore. Here are some of my current favorites taken at different times of year. Please join me on this journey.
